THE ATLAS OF TIBETAN MEDICINE

The Tibetan tradition is the only traditional Asian medical system with a complete pictorial aide-mémoire for the training of doctors. In 1992 Serindia published a seminal book on Tibetan medical paintings titled Tibetan Medical Paintings: Illustrations to the Blue Beryl Treatise of Sangye Gyamtso (1653-1705), edited by Anthony Aris together with Yuri Parfionovitch, Gyurme Dorje, and Fernand Meyer. The 77 paintings are from a set found at the Buratia Museum near the Mongolian border. They are not only valued for their extraordinarily rich content, but also for their fine artistic qualities. [The book has long gone out-of-print and Serindia is planning on a new edition.]

The Atlas of Tibetan Medicine starts from the mandala of Medicine Buddha, transmission of his teachings, followed by causes of the diseases, diagnosis, treatment, human physiology, natural objects that can be used as medicines, such as herbs, minerals and animal products, human embryology, dream prognosis, conduct, and diet.
