THE CHIVALROUS HERO by Tay Bak Chiang
27 Nov 2015 to 10 Jan 2016
Among world’s renowned literary genres, martial arts genre (wuxia 武侠) is among the most read. In Asia, the genre permeates the fabrics ofpopular culture in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Jin Yong 金庸 (pen name of Louis Cha 1924-) is perhaps the best known and most popular, with more than 100 million copies sold (written between1955-1972). His novels are fused with history and fantasy, characters created to represent the best and worst of universal human qualities.Tay Bak Chiang, a Singaporean artist-painter with classical Chinese painting background, has been a big fan of Jin Yong’s novels sincechildhood. In this exhibition he created exceptional works with classical painting and graphic qualities that were inspired by JinYong’s many characters and ideals. The novels are rich and vivid, with references to a wide variety of subjects ranging from the Chinese four classical arts (lyre and weiqi playing, calligraphy and painting), to unorthodox cults and other oddities of life. Tay draws upon Legends of the Condor Heroes 射雕英雄传, The Return of the Condor Heroes 神雕侠侣, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils 天龙八部, The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre 倚天屠龍記, and the Smiling, Proud Wanderer 笑傲江湖. Jin Yong and martial art novel fans as well as art connoisseurs wouldbe delighted that these works are interpreted in new ways in Tay Bak Chiang’s paintings. The exhibition title “The Chivalrous Hero” refers to the conversation in the novel The Returns of the Condor Heros, Guo Jing 郭靖 to Yang Guo 杨过: “The chivalrous man does his part for his country and people.” Xia Zhi Da Zhe, The Chivalrous Hero, we are proud topresent this exhibition at Serindia Gallery from November 27 2105 through 10 January 2016.
